Beauty, Natural Philosophy, Reflections, Science, Scientist

Just as the word “science” (scientia) means originally just knowledge and until the eighteenth century covered even theology (which was called the “mother of all sciences”), so natural philosophy (philosophia naturalis), which was also called physica or physiologia, covered the entire domain of the created world, ... 1. The way he has an “aha!” moment whenever he discovers something, no matter what the rest of the world thinks of it.
  2. The way his hands manipulate things at the bench – his manual dexterity being the most enviable.
  3. The way he insists that the study of science is really the study of natural philosophy – the philosophy of existence.
  4. The way he finds satisfaction in bringing together disparate things and explaining new things to me.
  5. The way he discusses new concepts with his fellow scientists with such passion.
  6. The way he works to make a difference for the good of the world, not motivated by money.
  7. The way he says man cannot negotiate reality: the laws of nature rule in science.
  8. The way he can read labels on consumer packages and understand what is or what is not important.
  9. The way he sees science all around him from baking and cooking in the kitchen to simply looking at tidal pools on a hike.
  10. The way he says, “I don’t know. Let’s find out!” with the same sense of adventure as a small child.
  11. Bonus: The way he looks hot in a pressed white lab coat!

I used to dream about escaping my ordinary life, but my life was never ordinary. I had simply failed to notice
how extraordinary it was. Likewise, I never imagined that home might be something I would miss.

Love can not fill the thickened lung with breath,
Nor clean the blood, nor set the fractured bone;
Yet many a man is making friends with death
Even as I speak, for lack of love alone.

No man can be ideally successful until he has found his place. Like a locomotive he is strong on the track, but weak anywhere else. – Orison Swett Mardone

I love to travel by train! My favorite train ride was during the summer after grade ten when I traveled with my best girlfriend from Calgary to Vancouver through the Canadian Rockies. We both fell hopelessly in love with a handsome university student who boarded the train in Revelstoke and spent more time looking at him than the glorious scenery all around us.

Thanksgiving, after all, is a word of action.

W.J. Cameron

At dawn on Thanksgiving I set out on a road trip to pick up my eldest daughter so that she could join us for our family dinner. Although I was not particularly enthusiastic about doing the six hour drive, as I wanted to stay home to prepare food for our big dinner, I decided to make the best of it.

As it turned out, there was hardly any traffic, the scenery in the morning light was breathtaking, and I was captivated by a CD that I had wanted to hear for some time. The return drive gave my daughter and me a rare opportunity for uninterrupted dialog about her life plans and sharing humorous travel tales. To top it off, when we arrived home, her sisters had prepared the entire feast by themselves and all we had to do was sit down and enjoy it. All in all, despite my initial apprehensions, it turned out to be one of my very best Thanksgivings!

October’s poplars are flaming torches lighting the way to winter.

I realized today that we are quickly nearing the end of the year and my 2010 list of resolutions is only partially completed. At first I filled with remorse that I did not have the discipline and drive to finish all my action items in a timely fashion. But as I began to reflect on all the wonderful things that I have accomplished this year, I felt much better. Surely I can attend to one more project in the remaining ten weeks before year-end!
